PRODUCT PHILOSOPHY

It is estimated that flame-retardant materials were first developed around 400 BC. When we talk about flame retardants, firefighter clothes and their fire-resistant gloves generally come to mind. We know that people who work around intense heat should have the appropriate equipment. This also applies to the objects in the same environment firefighters fight. As such, one of the first flame-retardant applications in the textile sector was used in the 1600s. It was used to reduce the fire risk posed by the curtains in Paris Theater.

WHY DOES A TEXTILE PRODUCT NEED A FLAME-RETARDANT FINISH?

Textile materials with large surface areas and high combustion potential are given a flame-retardant finish to protect them against ignition.
Flame-retardant materials delay the combustion of textile materials. This prevents the fire from accelerating, allowing time for a quick response, the application of first aid and, crucially, an escape from the fire.
It subdues the energy and intensity of toxic gases released during a fire.

WHAT IS THE LIMITING OXYGEN INDEX (LOI)?

A combustion needs three components to occur: combustible material, oxygen and heat. If one of these components is lacking, then the combustion cannot occur. In nature, there are no incombustible materials; however, any product can be flame-retardant to a certain degree depending on its LOI value. Additionally, every material needs oxygen to keep burning, and the amount of oxygen required differs with each material. The amount of oxygen a material needs to burn is called the Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI). The higher the value, the lower the flammability of the material.

As an example: the LOI value of cotton is 18 percent. The oxygen content of the atmosphere is 21 percent. Because there is more oxygen in an atmospheric environment (21 percent) than the LOI value needed to burn cotton (18 percent), any cotton fabric will burn out once it starts to burn. In other words, cotton will have more oxygen than it needs in an atmospheric environment.
